Probate is an authority from the Court, establishing who has authority to deal with an estate. Probate is required if the deceased had assets, and if the asset providers or financial institutions request a Grant of Probate or letters of Administration as the case may be.
If there is land or a Property then probate will almost certainly be required.
If there is a bank account with £50,000 in or more then probate will almost certainly be required.
